Dandruff occurs when the skin cells on the scalp renew themselves faster than normal. Instead of every 28 days, the skin renews itself after just 7 to 14 days. The excess skin cells clump together and become visible as white flakes. This can be caused by stress, hormonal changes, dry scalp or the fungus Malassezia furfur, which benefits from excessive sebum production.

Dandruff is generally harmless, but can cause itching or irritation. The good news is that it can often be quickly brought under control with special anti-dandruff shampoos or mild scalp care.
